New York… Chile Backs Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara and Plans to Invest in the Region

Chile affirmed that it “supports the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region,” and “considers the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 to be the just, sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution.”
This position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed following talks held on Monday in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Chilean counterpart, Mr. Francisco Pérez Mackenna.
The meeting was held in the presence of the President of the Republic of Chile, Mr. José Antonio Kast.
The joint communiqué further stated that “Chile has decided to translate its support into concrete bilateral action and will work to strengthen opportunities for economic and trade partnerships in the Moroccan Sahara region, with a view to consolidating ties in the fields of investment, trade and productive development.”
It also noted that Chile “welcomes and commits to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025),” thereby joining calls for the parties to engage in negotiations without preconditions, on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, with a view to reaching a final political solution acceptable to all parties.
During the meeting, the two ministers also signed the “Terms of Reference” to launch negotiations on a free trade agreement between the two countries.
