Veto on the Moroccan Sahara Brings New UN Meeting on November 10

ALDAR /
The United Nations General Assembly is set to hold an official meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York, to discuss the use of the veto power in connection with the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

The meeting falls within the framework of implementing the mechanism established under General Assembly Resolution 76/262, known as the Veto Initiative, according to an official letter sent by General Assembly President Khalil Rahman to the permanent representatives and observers to the organization.
The meeting follows the exercise of the veto by one of the permanent members of the Security Council during its 10,260th meeting, held on October 30, 2026, which was devoted to discussing the situation concerning the Moroccan Sahara.
This prompted the activation of the UN mechanism, which provides for a General Assembly meeting within ten working days of the use of a veto, allowing member states to discuss the reasons behind the decision and its implications.
The November 10 meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for member states to exchange views on the latest developments in the issue and the repercussions of the veto, amid evolving international discussions surrounding the Moroccan Sahara and the future of the related political process.
