United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has praised Morocco’s role in defending multilateralism, highlighting the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the active presence of Moroccan diplomacy at both the United Nations and international levels.

The remarks came during talks held on Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York between Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, and the UN Secretary-General.

During the meeting, António Guterres asked Minister Bourita to convey his fraternal greetings, imbued with profound respect, to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him. He also expressed his admiration for the Kingdom of Morocco’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and its courageous positions in defence of the three pillars of the United Nations, even amid the complex international circumstances facing the world.

The UN Secretary-General stressed that the world is going through difficult times, marked by worsening crises and the expansion of armed conflicts, noting that Morocco is, “fortunately, in a very good situation,” thanks to the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

In the same context, Guterres expressed his appreciation for the role played by Moroccan diplomacy under the leadership of the Sovereign, describing it as active, skilful and firm, both within the United Nations and on the international stage.

This recognition by the UN Secretary-General reflects the position Morocco has come to occupy within the multilateral system, against the backdrop of the Kingdom’s engagement in a number of international issues and its steadfast commitment to defending the principles and pillars of the United Nations. This has further strengthened Morocco’s presence as an influential diplomatic actor on issues of international concern.

For his part, Nasser Bourita conveyed to the UN Secretary-General the warm greetings of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, as well as the Sovereign’s high appreciation for the cooperation that has characterised relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Nations throughout António Guterres’ two terms since he assumed the post of Secretary-General in 2016.

The talks come amid Morocco’s intensive presence at the United Nations headquarters in New York, reflecting the Kingdom’s continued commitment to international multilateral action and to strengthening coordination and cooperation with the UN on the various issues on the international community’s agenda.
