Historic Visit Expected: Indian Prime Minister Set to Visit Morocco and Meet King Mohammed VI Amid Hopes for Support of Moroccan Sahara

ALDAR/

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning an official tour at the beginning of July, which will include several countries, among them the Kingdom of Morocco. The visit—expected to feature an official meeting with King Mohammed VI—comes in a regional and international context where observers are closely watching New Delhi’s stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue.

According to multiple media sources, this anticipated visit aligns with India’s vision to strengthen ties with strategic partners in North Africa, with Morocco at the forefront. Morocco is viewed as a key gateway to the African continent and a promising market for advanced investments in various sectors such as renewable energy, technology, food security, and infrastructure.

Although India has yet to formally declare support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, its political discourse in recent years suggests a shift in its approach—particularly amid growing ties with Morocco and deteriorating relations with Algeria. India, which has previously participated in international forums alongside Morocco, now appears to be in a strategic position to join the list of major powers—such as the United States, Spain, and Germany—that have clearly endorsed Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.

International relations experts view Modi’s visit to Morocco as potentially a historic diplomatic milestone, especially if it results in a political declaration in support of Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara under its sovereignty. Should this materialize, India—as a member of the BRICS group and a key player in global geopolitical balances—would provide a significant boost to Morocco’s position at the United Nations and in regional forums.

Discussions between the two sides are expected to cover issues of bilateral cooperation in digital economy, cybersecurity, solar energy, and pharmaceutical industries. The agenda will also likely address ways to support regional stability and enhance security in the Sahel-Sahara region, which continues to witness growing terrorist threats and foreign interventions.

It is worth noting that Moroccan-Indian relations have experienced rapid growth over the past decade, culminating in several economic and scientific agreements. High-level visits have taken place between Rabat, Casablanca, and New Delhi, reflecting strong political will to transform this cooperation into a comprehensive strategic partnership.
