A Major Blow to Polisario and Its Sponsor Algeria: U.S. State Department: Autonomy under Moroccan Sovereignty is the Only Viable Solution

In an official confirmation for the first time from the new Trump administration, U.S. Secretary of State reaffirmed the United States’ steadfast position on the Moroccan Sahara issue. This statement follows the first meeting between the U.S. Secretary of State and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In an official statement, the U.S. Secretary of State confirmed that “the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which is serious and realistic, as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to this dispute.” He also added, “The United States continues to believe that real autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution.”
The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized President Trump’s call for the parties to engage in immediate discussions, using Morocco’s autonomy plan as the sole framework for negotiating a mutually acceptable solution. He also mentioned that the United States would facilitate any progress toward this goal.
With this statement, the Trump administration has definitively closed the issue of the Moroccan Sahara in the eyes of the United States, shutting the door to any attempt to question Morocco’s sovereignty over the region. This represents a significant blow to the Polisario Front and Algeria, which had hoped for a larger role in this issue.
Despite the repeated attempts by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to pressure the U.S. administration through various diplomatic efforts, the consistent American position on the Moroccan Sahara issue puts Algeria in an awkward position and isolates the Polisario Front further on the international stage.
This new U.S. stance reflects a decisive shift in American policy regarding the Sahara and reaffirms Washington’s unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the region, making it even more challenging for Algeria to find alternative solutions in favor of the Polisario.
