Visit of AFRICOM Commander to Algeria: Addressing Algeria’s Shortcomings in Facing Terrorist Challenges

ALDAR/

General Michael Langley, Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), visited Algeria where he met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The visit was not limited to discussions on bilateral cooperation but took place within the context of the deteriorating security situation in the region, particularly in southern Algeria, where terrorist activities are on the rise.

General Langley’s visit coincided with growing criticism of Algeria’s security shortcomings in addressing terrorist organizations that continue to threaten security in the southern regions, especially along the border with Mali.

Despite significant military investments by Algeria to enhance its defense capabilities, questions remain about the effectiveness of these measures in combating terrorism, particularly in the vast desert areas that have become safe havens for numerous armed groups such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, the Azawad Movement, and the threats posed by the Polisario Front in the region.

Discussions between Algerian and American officials mainly focused on strengthening efforts to combat these escalating threats, especially in light of recurring reports of kidnappings and arms trafficking across the borders.
