Algeria has suffered a new diplomatic blow—this time from within its own capital. Massad Boulos, the U.S. Senior Advisor for North Africa, reaffirmed during an interview with the Algerian newspaper El Watan the United States’ unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

In a highly symbolic moment, the senior American official reinforced Washington’s clear stance on the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, causing embarrassment to Algerian authorities—especially since the statement wasn’t published by an international outlet, but by a state-affiliated Algerian newspaper, which amplified its media and political impact.

During his official visit to Algeria, Boulos met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. He left no room for interpretation, stating in the interview that the United States considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative “the only serious, realistic, and credible basis” for resolving the artificial conflict over the Sahara. He also confirmed that Washington remains committed to its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.

What makes this statement even more striking is its timing and location. It comes amid Morocco’s intensifying diplomatic efforts across Africa and international organizations, strengthening Rabat’s geopolitical position and further isolating Algeria’s separatist stance—an approach that has grown outdated in light of evolving international perspectives.

Boulos also emphasized the United States’ willingness to facilitate any progress toward a peaceful and lasting solution, provided that negotiations are based solely on the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty.

This declaration reinforces the fact that U.S. support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara was not merely a temporary decision made during former President Donald Trump’s term, but rather a long-term strategic commitment embraced by U.S. decision-making institutions regardless of changes in administration.

Against this backdrop of Morocco’s growing international momentum, Algeria appears stuck in a recurring defensive posture—resorting to denunciation and protest without offering viable alternatives—while the Polisario Front, which it backs, finds itself increasingly isolated, even among its former allies.
