Cabo Verde Reaffirms Strong Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara and Endorses Autonomy as the Only Solution

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Manuel Augusto Lima Amante da Rosa, reaffirmed on Monday in New York his country’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, as well as its full support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only solution.

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed following talks between Mr. Lima Amante da Rosa and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Republic of Cabo Verde also welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara.

In the same communiqué, Mr. Lima Amante da Rosa commended the international momentum initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of the Autonomy Plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

For his part, Mr. Bourita expressed his gratitude to his Cabo Verdean counterpart for his country’s steadfast and strong support for the Moroccan Sahara, while commending the opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of Cabo Verde in Dakhla in August 2022.

The two ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to the excellence of bilateral relations, characterized by friendship, cooperation and solidarity, as well as their determination to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries.

In this regard, Mr. Bourita expressed Morocco’s willingness to support Cabo Verde in developing its priority sectors, particularly healthcare, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, the blue economy and the energy transition.

The two sides agreed to hold the third session of the Joint Cooperation Commission during the first quarter of 2027, with the aim of exploring new partnership opportunities and giving fresh impetus to the various areas of cooperation.

Regarding the Royal initiatives aimed at promoting Africa’s development and international standing, the Republic of Cabo Verde praised the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and highlighted the Royal initiatives in support of peace, stability and shared prosperity across the continent, particularly the Atlantic African States Initiative and the Royal Initiative aimed at facilitating the access of Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
