Trump Reaffirms U.S. Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara, Backs Autonomy Plan as the Only Path to Resolution

U.S. President Donald J. Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, reiterating that Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative remains the only viable framework for achieving a just, lasting, and definitive resolution to the regional dispute.
The position was conveyed in a message sent by President Trump to His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, underscoring the continuity of U.S. policy and the enduring strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington.
“The United States is clear: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, and we support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Initiative as the only basis for achieving a just and lasting solution,” Trump said in his message to the Moroccan monarch.
The U.S. president added that any alternative approach would merely prolong “an unacceptable status quo,” stressing that “this conflict must end now” and pledging that the United States would continue working to advance efforts toward a final settlement.
Beyond reaffirming Washington’s position, the message carries significant diplomatic and political weight, reinforcing longstanding U.S. support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal while highlighting the depth of the strategic partnership between the two allies on regional security, stability, and economic cooperation.
Trump also praised King Mohammed VI’s leadership, describing it as “a pillar of stability,” and commended Morocco’s continued commitment to peace, counterterrorism, and regional security. He further highlighted the Kingdom’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, describing it as a key element of the strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington.
The U.S. president also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to expanding security cooperation with Morocco to address growing challenges across the Sahel, where the Kingdom is regarded as a key regional partner.
On the economic front, Trump said King Mohammed VI’s development vision creates new opportunities for shared prosperity and announced that he had instructed his administration to deepen economic and social cooperation with Morocco, including in the Kingdom’s Southern Provinces.
He further emphasized that American technology and innovation would continue supporting Morocco’s strategic development in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense, strengthening a long-term economic partnership between the two countries.
Trump concluded his message by expressing his determination to usher in a new chapter in U.S.-Morocco relations, built on advancing the shared interests of both nations and reinforcing one of the oldest and most enduring diplomatic partnerships maintained by the United States.
