Morocco Strengthens Its Role as a Responsible Regional Power… While Algeria Sinks into Isolation and Inaction

By: Sara Loukili– ALDAR

Morocco’s recent initiative of sending two Canadair firefighting planes to help extinguish the devastating wildfires in Spain—just weeks after providing similar support to Portugal—goes far beyond a humanitarian gesture. It has become a striking political statement that Morocco is asserting itself as a trustworthy and rising force in its regional and international environment. This step has not gone unnoticed in Europe, where Moroccan actions are now perceived as those of a reliable partner, in stark contrast to Algeria’s repeated disappointments, having never offered any tangible support to its neighbors or supposed allies.

While Morocco translates words into deeds through a practical diplomacy based on genuine solidarity, Algeria is absent from the scene, resorting instead to loud rhetoric about its “regional role” and “revolutionary legitimacy”—slogans that no longer convince even its closest partners. Europe, facing increasing climate and security pressures, now clearly recognizes that true stability and cooperation can only come through Morocco, whereas Algeria remains trapped in outdated political discourse, incapable of offering real solutions.

Today, the comparison between the two countries is particularly harsh for Algeria: Morocco saves lives and contributes to protecting the environment with the largest Canadair fleet in the region, while Algeria struggles even to control its own domestic fires, preferring instead to place blame on others. The European Union, for its part, no longer hides its practical alignment; genuine partnerships and strategic interests are tied to Rabat, while Algeria is viewed as an unreliable actor—loud in words but weak in action.

Images of Moroccan planes flying over Spanish territory carry far more than a technical operation; they are a clear declaration that Morocco is Europe’s partner for the future. Algeria, despite its futile diplomatic attempts, has nothing to offer but deeper isolation. The difference between the two is no longer a mere divergence of choices—it has become a profound divide between a country that delivers hope and action, and one that perpetuates failure and withdrawal.
