The Australian group Fortescue, led by businessman Andrew Forrest, has unveiled a massive new project aimed at connecting Morocco to Europe through an undersea power cable, as part of an ambitious vision to transform the Kingdom into a regional hub for the production and export of renewable energy.

This project is based on the vast natural potential that Morocco boasts—particularly solar energy available in the desert and wind energy generated by the strong winds blowing across large areas of the country. The Australian company plans to develop a clean electricity generation capacity of up to 100 gigawatts, with the goal of transmitting around 500 terawatt-hours annually to Europe—equivalent to Germany’s yearly energy consumption.

These vast amounts of electricity will be transmitted through a network of high-voltage subsea cables, enabling the supply of green energy to the European continent around the clock. This supports Europe’s efforts to secure stable and clean energy sources, moving away from reliance on fossil fuels.

The project is expected to contribute to strengthening the European Union’s energy security and accelerating the transition toward a low-emissions economy, while also giving a strong boost to local economic development in Morocco by creating new jobs and building modern infrastructure.

With this project, Morocco takes another step forward in consolidating its position as a key player in the future of sustainable energy, reaffirming its ability to play a strategic role in enhancing energy integration between Africa and Europe.
