A Major Wind Energy Project Set to Launch in Laayoune Through Moroccan–Emirati Partnership

The city of Laayoune is preparing to host one of Morocco’s most significant renewable energy ventures, thanks to a strategic partnership between the Moroccan conglomerate YNNA Group and the Emirati company AMEA Power. The upcoming project involves the construction of a wind farm with an installed capacity of 100 megawatts, further establishing Laayoune as a key player in the country’s energy transition and bolstering Morocco’s position as a regional leader in green energy across Africa.

This ambitious initiative aligns with Morocco’s long-standing commitment to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, which still account for the majority of the country’s electricity production. Coal, in particular, constitutes over 70 percent of national power generation. By developing this wind farm, Morocco aims to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 52 percent by 2030—a target it has been steadily working toward through major wind and solar projects.

With an estimated capacity of 100 megawatts, the new wind farm will be capable of supplying electricity to between 60,000 and 80,000 households annually. This highlights the project’s tangible impact on Morocco’s energy security. Moreover, it is expected to create numerous job opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, thereby supporting economic and social development in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.

AMEA Power is considered one of the most prominent players in clean energy across Africa. Its project portfolio exceeds 5 gigawatts, and it has successfully developed large-scale wind and solar plants in several countries. Among its key achievements is a 500-megawatt wind farm in Egypt, which is currently the largest of its kind on the continent.

This new project also underscores Morocco’s growing appeal as a destination for foreign investment in renewables, thanks to its stable political climate, supportive regulatory framework, and outstanding natural conditions—especially in its southern regions known for strong and consistent wind resources. Should this initial project succeed, the Moroccan–Emirati partnership may expand into even more ambitious ventures, including green hydrogen production and energy storage technologies.

The anticipated wind farm in Laayoune is far more than a mere electricity generation project—it reflects a forward-looking vision of a Morocco that embraces sustainable development, international cooperation, and investment in a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.
