Sahara: Greece Reaffirms Its Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative

Greece has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, considering it to be “a serious and credible contribution to the ongoing UN-led process” and that it “could constitute the most viable solution” for the definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was expressed by Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis in a statement to the press following his meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, who was visiting Athens.
Mr. Gerapetritis indicated that, in line with the common position of the European Union, Greece “fully supports the efforts undertaken by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to conduct negotiations on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy proposal, with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.”
In this context, the Greek Foreign Minister stressed that his country, in its capacity as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025–2026 term, “welcomes the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.”
Through this support, Greece, a member of the United Nations Security Council, fully aligns itself with the international momentum spearheaded by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, in favor of a definitive settlement of this regional dispute on the basis of the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.
This position also further reinforces the consensus among the 27 European Union member states around this approach, which is based on the UN-led process and the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a basis for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
