Algeria in Increasing Diplomatic Isolation… Tensions with Sahel Countries Threaten the Tebboune Regime’s Projects

Algeria is experiencing a sensitive phase of regional tension, particularly following the escalation of disputes with the Sahel Alliance countries (AES), which includes Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. These tensions go beyond mere political exchanges and foreshadow geopolitical and economic consequences that could deepen Algeria’s isolation and weaken its position on the African continent.

Niger, now fully aligned with its neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, is signaling potential escalatory steps that could seriously disrupt Algeria. Among these possible moves is the closure of Niger’s airspace to Algerian aircraft—similar to the action previously taken by Mali. Such a measure alone could paralyze Algerian air traffic to West Africa, especially if accompanied by similar decisions from other countries in the region.

But the issue extends beyond airspace. The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, intended to link Algeria with Nigeria via Niger’s territory, is also at risk. This project may be frozen or even canceled, delivering a serious blow to Algeria’s energy plans on the continent and opening the door for regional competitors like Morocco and Nigeria to strengthen their alternative partnership in the same field.

If these scenarios materialize, Algeria could find itself cut off from nearly 90% of aerial access to sub-Saharan Africa, leaving it with only one remaining route through its border with Mauritania, which stretches for 461 kilometers. However, this access point remains precarious due to the heightened activity of terrorist groups and smuggling networks in the area, making it unreliable as a permanent strategic corridor.

The current situation places Algerian policymakers in a difficult position, requiring a reassessment of Algeria’s relations with its African neighbors. Diplomatic solutions must be pursued to salvage vital projects and prevent the country from sliding further into isolation within its African surroundings.
