President Xi Jinping Meets with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney

On the afternoon of October 31, 2025 local time, President Xi Jinping met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea.
President Xi noted that this year marks the 55th anniversary of China-Canada diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of the China-Canada strategic partnership. Through the joint efforts of both sides, the China-Canada relationship is beginning to recover and improve. This is in line with the common interests of both countries. China attaches importance to the Canadian side’s stated desire that it seeks to improve bilateral relations in a pragmatic and constructive manner. The meeting provides an opportunity for bringing bilateral relations back to the right track of sound, stable and sustainable development at an early date and delivering more benefits to the two peoples.
President Xi underscored that China and Canada should develop an objective and rational perception of one another, view each other in the correct way, and advance the bilateral relations in light of the common and long-term interests of both countries. The two sides should uphold mutual benefit and expand practical cooperation in economy, trade, and energy, among other fields. They should increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges, support deeper mutual understanding between the two societies, and consolidate the public support for stronger ties. The two sides should strengthen coordination and cooperation in the United Nations and other multilateral frameworks, bring about a more just and equitable global governance system, and uphold international fairness and justice.
Prime Minister Carney said that for 55 years since the start of diplomatic ties, Canada and China have enjoyed a strong relationship. The new Canadian government places high importance on its relations with China. It wishes to seize the opportunity of the improvement of bilateral ties, renew the founding spirit of diplomatic relations, make up for lost time, restart bilateral cooperation, and achieve more outcomes in Canada-China relations in a pragmatic and constructive manner. Canada will work with China to keep up high-level exchanges, promote cooperation in such areas as agriculture, energy and climate change, deliver win-win results, and bring more benefits to the people of both countries. Canada and China share similar views on international affairs. The two sides need to enhance coordination and jointly practice multilateralism, uphold free trade, and advance the reform of the international economic order.
The two sides agreed to resume or restart exchanges and cooperation in various fields, move forward in solving the specific economic and trade issues of mutual concern, consolidate the momentum in the turnaround of their relations, and jointly advance the China-Canada strategic partnership.
Cai Qi and Wang Yi, among others, were present at the meeting.
