London has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative as a practical and realistic solution to the longstanding regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. The British government described the proposal as the most serious, credible, and viable basis for a lasting resolution.

This position was outlined in a joint statement issued following bilateral consultations between Morocco and the United Kingdom, which highlighted the convergence of views between the two countries on several regional and international issues, foremost among them the Sahara question. The statement emphasized the UK’s recognition of the positive momentum surrounding the issue under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The statement further noted that the UK is closely monitoring recent developments and considers that resolving the Sahara dispute would pave the way for greater stability in North Africa and foster regional integration, while also enhancing bilateral relations across multiple levels.

On the economic front, reflecting the strategic dimension of bilateral cooperation, the UK announced that UK Export Finance (UKEF) may support development projects in Morocco’s southern provinces. This potential involvement aligns with UKEF’s commitment to mobilize up to £5 billion to finance new economic projects throughout the Kingdom—strengthening the investment appeal of the region as an emerging economic hub.

Britain’s position, issued in a global context marked by shifting regional alliances, signals growing international recognition of the seriousness and credibility of Morocco’s approach to resolving the conflict. It also reinforces the UK’s orientation toward deepening its partnership with Morocco in economic, political, and security domains.

This political alignment between Rabat and London is expected to give new impetus to bilateral relations, particularly as British investors increasingly turn their attention to the Moroccan market. The southern provinces, in particular, are emerging as a strategic platform for development and investment, serving as a gateway to broader African markets.
