Calls in Italy to Break the Silence and Support Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara

Political and intellectual circles in Italy have recently witnessed growing calls urging Rome to reconsider its stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue. The Fondazione Luigi Einaudi has voiced concern over the Italian government’s continued adoption of a neutral position, one largely driven by economic interests—particularly its energy ties with Algeria.

The foundation, known for its liberal values and advocacy of European principles, emphasized that Morocco stands as a reliable strategic partner and a pillar of stability in a region marked by mounting geopolitical tensions. It stressed that the time has come for Italy to take a clear and unequivocal stand in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

In this context, the foundation warned that Italy’s ongoing neutrality does not serve Europe’s long-term interests. Instead, it opens the door for destabilizing forces to expand their influence in a sensitive region like North Africa—an indirect reference to Iranian interference and Algerian backing of separatist movements such as the Polisario Front.

These calls come at a time when Morocco’s relations with several European countries are strengthening, especially following the United States’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the southern provinces in December 2020, as part of the Abraham Accords and its role in countering terrorism and irregular migration.

Observers believe that Italy’s current position, while pragmatic, no longer aligns with the shifting dynamics of the region. In today’s context, political hesitation or silence has become increasingly costly amid growing power struggles and transnational security threats. As such, revising this stance is no longer merely a diplomatic option—it is a strategic imperative to safeguard stability on the southern shore of the Mediterranean.
