Morocco Strengthens Its Role as a Key Regional Power in Africa through Security and Defense Cooperation

ALDAR / Analysis
In a strategic shift that underscores its renewed ambitions in the heart of Africa, Morocco continues to consolidate its position as a central actor in matters of security and defense on the continent. This was recently reaffirmed by the participation of General Abdelkarim Najjar, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces, in the Conference of African Chiefs of Defense Staff held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
This participation goes far beyond a ceremonial presence at a regional event. It reflects a well-defined Moroccan vision aimed at bolstering South-South cooperation and responding to the growing security threats that Africa faces—challenges that increasingly transcend borders, such as terrorism, organized crime, and the illicit trafficking of weapons and people.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Moroccan general held a series of productive bilateral meetings with Kenyan military officials. These talks underscore Morocco’s commitment to establishing genuine strategic partnerships with East African nations—with Kenya standing out as a key regional power in the Horn of Africa.
Discussions focused on enhancing security and intelligence cooperation, strengthening field coordination in counter-terrorism efforts, border security, and mutual military training. These talks marked a qualitative shift in the bilateral relationship, one grounded in mutual respect and shared interests.
Morocco’s role in Africa has evolved beyond cultural and economic dimensions. Increasingly, it is taking an active role in defense, peace, and regional stability. This is evidenced by the Royal Armed Forces’ participation in UN peacekeeping operations and the training of military personnel in several allied African countries.
Moreover, through its proactive security diplomacy, Morocco presents a holistic model for African cooperation—combining sustainable development, humanitarian support, and coordinated efforts to confront common threats, such as armed militias and cross-border criminal networks.
Morocco’s presence in Africa is not driven by temporary interests, but by a comprehensive strategic vision. This vision prioritizes regional stability through balanced partnerships, tailored to the specific needs of each partner country, while emphasizing collective mechanisms for addressing the continent’s growing security challenges.
This approach aligns with King Mohammed VI’s repeated affirmations that Africa is not just a geographical space for cooperation, but rather a shared destiny and a real opportunity for deeper continental integration.
Amid intensifying security challenges across the continent, Morocco is asserting itself as a pillar of collective security in Africa. Its realistic yet flexible approach combines firmness in tackling threats with smart diplomacy in building diverse regional alliances.
With every diplomatic or military engagement, Morocco strengthens its role not only as a partner but as a key actor in shaping new African balances—ones rooted in security, development, and pan-African solidarity.
