Lana Zaki Nusseibeh has expressed her gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco for supporting her candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, praising the confidence Rabat has placed in her qualifications and ability to assume this high-level international responsibility.

In a letter of thanks addressed to the Kingdom of Morocco, Nusseibeh affirmed that she shares Morocco’s vision regarding the need to strengthen multilateralism and reinforce the role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security. She noted that growing global challenges make it increasingly necessary to develop mechanisms for cooperation and joint action among nations.

The candidate stressed that a more effective United Nations, guided in its work by the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, has become an urgent necessity. Such an organisation would be better equipped to respond to current developments, address international crises and strengthen its capacity to fulfil its mandate of maintaining international peace and security.

Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates had previously announced, citing an official source, that the Kingdom had welcomed the news of Lana Zaki Nusseibeh’s candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General. The source noted that her professional qualifications, extensive and diverse experience, and institutional career were among the key attributes that make her well suited to assume the position.

The same source explained that Morocco’s position reflects its conviction that international institutions should draw on qualified individuals capable of helping improve their performance, particularly at a time marked by increasingly complex crises and a growing need for international coordination to address shared challenges.

The source added that Rabat considers strengthening multilateralism and reinforcing the role of the United Nations essential to safeguarding international peace and security in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter. Morocco also expressed confidence that the candidate’s competence and vision could contribute to enhancing the organisation’s effectiveness and strengthening its standing on the international stage.

Morocco’s support for Nusseibeh’s candidacy comes within the broader context of the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening global governance and improving the performance of multilateral institutions, in line with its commitment to international cooperation and respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter. This comes at a time when calls are growing for reform of the UN system and for equipping it to respond more effectively to the political, security and economic transformations shaping the world.
