A Phone Call Between Wang Yi and Marco Rubio Rekindles Warmth in U.S.–China Relations

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on October 27, 2025. The discussion focused on the future of relations between the two global powers amid recent economic tensions.

During the call, Wang Yi emphasized that U.S.–China relations are vital to global stability, stressing that maintaining a “healthy, stable, and sustainable” relationship serves the shared interests of both nations and meets the expectations of the international community. He added that the personal rapport and mutual respect between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump represent a “valuable strategic asset” for both countries.

The Chinese minister highlighted that recent economic talks held in Kuala Lumpur helped clarify positions, strengthen mutual understanding, and reach a preliminary consensus on addressing urgent trade and economic issues on the basis of equality and respect. He underlined that dialogue remains the best way to overcome differences and avoid escalation or mutual pressure.

For his part, Marco Rubio described U.S.–China relations as “the most important in the world,” expressing hope that upcoming high-level meetings would send a positive message to the international community about both nations’ commitment to cooperation and dialogue.

Analysts see this call as a clear sign that Beijing and Washington are attempting to rebuild political and economic trust after months of trade tensions, especially as both sides appear eager to avoid any confrontation that could threaten the global economy or regional security in the Asia-Pacific.

With this move, both powers seem to be paving the way for a new meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump—one that could shape the next phase of bilateral relations between the world’s two largest economies.
