Moroccan authorities have announced that the country’s first floating solar power plant has entered its testing phase on the Oued Rmel Dam near Ksar Sghir. The plant has a production capacity of 13 megawatts and is expected to supply the Tangier Med port complex with environmentally friendly electricity while reducing water evaporation from the reservoir.

Construction of the project began in May 2025, marking a national first. More than 400 securely anchored floating platforms will be installed to accommodate thousands of solar panels covering approximately ten hectares of the reservoir’s 123-hectare surface area.

The project is part of the Tangier Med Port’s “Carbon Reduction” program, a strategic pillar of Morocco’s economy. In July 2023, the port management group issued a tender to implement this floating photovoltaic plant, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to energy innovation and the protection of water resources.

Morocco is currently considering two similar projects: one at the Lalla Takerkoust Dam near Marrakech, and another at the Oued El Makhazine Dam in northern Morocco. Internationally, countries such as France, Indonesia, Thailand, and China have implemented comparable initiatives to generate electricity from floating solar panels.
