As part of strengthening transport infrastructure on the southern borders of the Kingdom, preparations continue for the launch of the project to expand National Road No. 1 at the El Guerguerat border crossing, which is considered one of the most strategic crossings linking Morocco to Mauritania and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The project includes the development of a 3.15-kilometer stretch of the road, aiming to increase its capacity and improve traffic flow, especially for trucks and vehicles crossing the border, which have been witnessing a growing increase due to commercial and economic growth in the region. In addition, the project will include the development of roundabouts and vehicle parking areas to provide organized and secure spaces for stopping vehicles, facilitating customs and security control procedures.

Financial investments estimated at around 32.11 million dirhams have been allocated for this project, clearly demonstrating the Moroccan authorities’ commitment to developing their border infrastructure according to modern standards that align with the requirements of economic development and regional integration.

The road expansion works are expected to take no more than 8 months, reflecting the desire to complete the project quickly and efficiently to ensure the continuity of smooth trade and traffic flow, especially given the vital role that the El Guerguerat crossing plays in connecting Morocco with other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This project also comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to promote economic and social development in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region, and to improve transport and supply conditions, thereby enhancing investment opportunities and encouraging the flow of goods and services across the border.

Upon completion of the expansion works, the El Guerguerat border crossing is expected to witness a marked improvement in its operational capacity, which will contribute to raising Morocco’s competitiveness as a logistical and regional hub connecting North and Sub-Saharan Africa.
