Surprise Diplomatic Shift: A Second South African Party Backs Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara

The South African political party Build One South Africa (BOSA) has officially expressed its clear support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a realistic and credible solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. The party’s position reflects a significant shift in the stance of some South African political actors regarding the issue.

This marks the second such position recently within South Africa’s political scene, following the earlier declaration of support for Moroccan sovereignty by the party Umkhonto we Sizwe (@MkhontoweSizwex), breaking what had long been a prevailing silence among many political forces in the country on the protracted conflict.

BOSA, regarded as one of South Africa’s emerging political movements, emphasized in its statement that Morocco’s autonomy proposal constitutes a serious and credible solution that continues to gain growing international support. The party stressed that it contributes to fostering stability and development across the Sahel and Sahara regions.

This shift in South African political perspectives comes amid increasing calls across the African continent to reassess outdated ideological alignments and embrace more pragmatic approaches that uphold state sovereignty and support peaceful, mutually agreed-upon solutions.

According to observers, the growing support for Morocco’s autonomy plan signals a gradual transformation in how some African elites are engaging with the Sahara issue—especially in light of Morocco’s dynamic diplomatic efforts both on the continent and globally, which have led to a rising number of countries recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
