Report from a Prestigious American Center in Washington: How the Polisario Transformed from a Separatist Movement into a Terrorist Tool Supported by Algeria and Iran to Destabilize the Region

A recent report issued by the American “National Interest” center in Washington, considered one of the most serious reports revealing the true face of the Polisario movement, shows that it is no longer just a separatist movement but has transformed into a network linked to international terrorism exploited by regional actors to pursue their agendas at the expense of security and stability in North Africa.

The report, based on conclusive evidence, confirms that the Polisario is directly linked to international terrorist organizations supported by Iran and Hezbollah. Leaked conversations between a Polisario leader and Hezbollah operatives in Syria were documented. These communications reveal clear support for terrorist operations against Israel and coordination in attacks involving Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian regime, confirming the Polisario’s alignment with the terrorist axis threatening the Middle East and North Africa region.

The report also highlights the camps located in Tindouf, Algeria, under Polisario control, which have become hotbeds for terrorist activities and recruitment of fighters. Terrorist groups such as the “Islamic State in the Greater Sahara” and “Fath al-Andalus,” linked to organizations like ISIS and Al-Qaeda, have emerged from these camps. Additionally, Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi, a former Polisario fighter, became the leader of ISIS in the Sahel before being eliminated, confirming the movement’s involvement in the spread of terrorism.

This alarming reality clearly reflects the destabilizing role of the Algerian regime, which continues to support and finance the Polisario, not only as a political tool against Morocco but also as a front to push terrorist agendas in the region, exploiting the just Sahrawi cause to serve its narrow interests.

Previously, the Polisario was seen as a secular movement with a leftist ideology, but regional shifts have made it today a partner of terrorist networks and actors hostile to Morocco and regional security, accompanied by serious human rights violations such as child recruitment and forced military training on children, according to reports from international organizations.

In this context, decisive steps were taken by several major countries such as the United States, Britain, France, and Israel, which recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, a strategic decision that consolidates Morocco’s role as a key partner in combating terrorism and maintaining regional security. Even Syria, which previously supported the Polisario, has ceased its support and expelled the movement from its territory, reflecting a clear shift in the balance of power and international community support for Morocco.

The continued support of the Polisario by Algeria and Iran reflects a dangerous double standard in the regional stance, where the Sahara issue is used as a pretext to fuel security tensions, while Morocco continues its constructive efforts toward regional stability and development.

This American report confirms that the Polisario is no longer a separatist movement but has become a terrorist threat exploited by the Algerian regime and other actors to undermine security in North Africa and the Mediterranean. This imposes on the international community a need to reconsider its positions, stop supporting this entity that threatens peace and security, and side with Morocco’s position representing stability and moderation in the region.
