The Masks Fall… DW Documentary Exposes Polisario and Algerian Regime as Targets of Syria’s New Justice

In an unprecedented shift on the Middle Eastern political scene, reports from Damascus reveal the involvement of Polisario fighters in the Syrian conflict, fighting alongside the forces of the former regime led by Bashar al-Assad in a bloody alliance with Iranian militias and Hezbollah—against the will of the Syrian people.

As Syria enters a new era under the leadership of President Ahmed Al-Shara, truths are beginning to surface about the role that foreign actors played in fueling the conflict and supporting the machinery of oppression. Chief among them is the Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, which deployed fighters to take part in battles on Syrian soil.

A documentary aired by German channel DW in its evening broadcast confirmed that Polisario elements were directly involved in military operations alongside Assad’s forces and committed serious human rights violations in multiple regions. These revelations led the new Syrian authorities to arrest several Polisario fighters, who remain in detention facing charges of war crimes and the massacre of civilians.

Algeria, which officially denies any involvement, has reportedly attempted to establish backchannel communications with the new Syrian regime in hopes of negotiating the release of the detained Polisario members. However, reliable sources in Damascus confirm that the new leadership under Al-Shara is refusing any deal, insisting on transparent and fair trials as part of a new Syrian vision that will not tolerate crimes or the regional players who contributed to the suffering of its people.

In contrast, relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the new Syria have notably warmed, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty, rejection of foreign interference, and coordination on sensitive regional matters. Damascus now views Morocco as a strategic partner, one that can be relied on in reconstruction efforts and the defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This shift in alliances places Algeria and the Polisario in growing regional isolation, making their involvement in the Syrian file a political and moral burden that is increasingly difficult to cover up, especially with the new Syrian leadership determined to expose and hold all perpetrators accountable, regardless of their affiliations or supporters.

As regional alliances are redrawn, those who wagered on the blood of nations are now paying the price for their miscalculations. The new Syria forgives no crimes and forgets no betrayal.

The question now is: What comes next after these explosive revelations by DW? And what will follow the closure of the Polisario’s offices in Damascus?
