In a significant diplomatic affirmation, the Republic of Kenya has expressed its firm backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative regarding the Sahara, describing it as the only sustainable framework for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.
This endorsement was made public through a Joint Communiqué issued following a high-level meeting in Rabat on Monday, May 26, 2025, between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Minister for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi.
According to the Communiqué, “The Republic of Kenya considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach to the resolution of the Sahara issue and intends to cooperate with like-minded States to foster its realization.”
Kenya also hailed the increasing international consensus in support of Morocco’s autonomy proposal and commended the proactive leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in advancing a credible and pragmatic path forward. The statement underscored that the autonomy initiative stands as the only credible, serious, and realistic basis for ending the conflict.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the exclusive role of the United Nations in steering the political process surrounding the Sahara question. They reiterated their endorsement of the latest Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024), as essential references in the search for a lasting settlement.
The Kingdom of Morocco, in turn, expressed its appreciation for Kenya’s clear and constructive stance, notably its recognition of Morocco’s ongoing cooperation with the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, aimed at moving the political process forward in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions.
