On the sidelines of the 34th Arab League Summit held in Baghdad, Iraq, a pivotal meeting took place between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Al-Shibani. This encounter marked a turning point in the trajectory of bilateral relations, signaling the opening of a new chapter of cooperation following years of estrangement and diplomatic distance.
During the meeting, both parties expressed a shared desire to rebuild bridges of communication and strengthen bilateral ties. They emphasized the importance of moving forward toward a future grounded in mutual understanding and joint action, within a framework of mutual respect for sovereignty and the spirit of Arab brotherhood.
The meeting culminated in the announcement of a preliminary agreement to establish formal diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Syrian Arab Republic. This step reflects a significant evolution in political positions and contributes to the growing momentum of Arab rapprochement amid a shifting regional landscape.
As a practical gesture underscoring the seriousness of this development, the Kingdom of Morocco expressed its intention to reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus—an initiative warmly welcomed by the Syrian side. In return, Syria announced that it had begun taking the necessary steps to reopen its embassy in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, affirming both countries’ commitment to restoring relations to their natural course and opening new horizons for bilateral cooperation.
This development comes at a time when the Arab world is witnessing increasing efforts to bridge divides and restore ties among member states, driven by a collective conviction that coordination and integration are key to addressing shared challenges.
Through this agreement, Syria and Morocco have laid a new cornerstone in the rebuilding of Arab relations—a step that may pave the way for greater openness and cooperation between the two countries across various fields, particularly in political, economic, and cultural domains.
