Rabat… Morocco and Burundi Strengthen Their Strategic Cooperation in Support of Unity and Development

The capital, Rabat, hosted an official meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, between Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and his Burundian counterpart, Mr. Albert Shingiro, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation.
This meeting comes within the framework of strengthening the partnership between Rabat and Bujumbura, which has witnessed remarkable development since Burundi announced on October 25, 2010, the withdrawal of its recognition of the separatist entity — a turning point in bilateral relations that paved the way for mutual diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The Republic of Burundi continues to reaffirm its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the Kingdom’s territorial integrity. This position was tangibly demonstrated by the opening of a Burundian consulate general in the city of Laayoune on February 28, 2020 — a strong symbolic gesture of its explicit support for Moroccan sovereignty.
This diplomatic closeness was further reinforced by the reciprocal opening of embassies: Burundi inaugurated its embassy in Rabat in 2015, while the Kingdom opened its embassy in Bujumbura in 2021, establishing a foundation for direct political and institutional communication between the two capitals.
In terms of practical cooperation, both parties praised the achievements made under the joint roadmap for the period 2021–2024, which laid the groundwork for the exchange of experiences and expertise across various development sectors, serving the interests of both nations.
As part of efforts to strengthen the legal framework for bilateral cooperation, Rabat previously hosted, on April 23 and 24, 2024, a preparatory meeting that brought together experts from both countries, paving the way for the first session of the Morocco–Burundi Joint Cooperation Commission, based on the agreement signed between the two sides on October 19, 2022, during Mr. Shingiro’s official visit to Morocco.
The Kingdom also stood out through its active participation in the roundtable held in Bujumbura on December 5 and 6, 2024, which aimed to support Burundi’s efforts in implementing its strategic vision to become a developing country by 2040 and an advanced country by 2060.
This ministerial meeting reflects the depth of mutual understanding between the two countries and reinforces the course of an African partnership based on solidarity, joint development, and mutual respect.
