ALDAR/ Ahmed El Bouhssani

Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, stated in a press briefing on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York that, thanks to the foresight of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom of Morocco has consolidated its position as an influential and proactive actor on major global issues, including peace, security, development, migration, climate change, and counter-terrorism.

Bourita emphasized that the momentum initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in recent years through the autonomy initiative represents the sole foundation for resolving the regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara. He explained that Morocco’s participation in the high-level week of the UN strengthened this momentum, amid supportive international positions, including the United States, which now encourages investments in the southern provinces an economic recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, alongside similar stances from France and the United Kingdom.

Bourita also highlighted that the King’s reception of the foreign ministers of the Sahel Union marked a pivotal stage in transitioning the royal initiative to enable Sahel countries to access the Atlantic Ocean from the preparation phase to implementation, with growing international support. He added that this initiative, along with the Atlantic Africa initiative, opens new horizons for development and South-South cooperation. The sixth ministerial meeting of the Atlantic Africa Initiative was held on the sidelines of the General Assembly, with future meetings scheduled in Mauritania, Cameroon, and Benin to enhance regional coordination.

Furthermore, Nasser Bourita noted that the Royal High Message addressed to the Supreme Council of Scholars was widely welcomed within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, serving as a spiritual and intellectual reference that reinforces the core values of Islam and emphasizes the civilizational and human dimension of this anniversary.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister also reaffirmed Morocco’s core positions, based on the Royal vision, calling for solutions beyond crisis management toward sustainable outcomes. He underlined Morocco’s support for a ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and the respect of Palestinian rights, stressing that a just and lasting solution requires the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.

He further highlighted the role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as President of the Al-Quds Committee, in supporting the residents of the Holy City through the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, preserving its identity and status as a space for interfaith coexistence.

In a parallel high-level meeting, Morocco called for strengthening African integration through infrastructure investment, noting that the continent requires 170 billion dollars to reach the desired level in this strategic sector.

On the sidelines of the session, Nasser Bourita held a series of bilateral meetings with officials from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to diversifying partnerships and reinforcing South-South cooperation as a strategic choice.
