De Mistura Expresses Optimism: Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative Returns to the Forefront of the International Sahara Discourse

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, has called on members of the Security Council to seize what he described as an “unprecedented momentum” surrounding the Sahara issue, particularly in light of the current positions of the United States and France.
In his recent address, De Mistura noted that the next three months represent a strategic window of opportunity to launch a renewed dynamic—aimed, on the one hand, at de-escalating regional tensions, and on the other, at outlining a revitalized roadmap toward a realistic and lasting political solution to the conflict.
Within this context, the UN envoy emphasized the importance of refocusing the debate on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, stressing that the initiative deserves a more detailed explanation and broader understanding, as it offers a pragmatic foundation for resolving the dispute.
This marks the first time that De Mistura has publicly expressed optimism regarding a potential resolution, clearly indicating that the upcoming phase will witness a qualitative shift in discussions—centered around the autonomy initiative. This shift is seen as a strong indicator of growing international support for Morocco’s proposal.
The question now remains: how will the opposing parties—particularly the separatist front and its supporters—respond to this new direction emerging within the corridors of the United Nations?
