In an interview with El País, the Spanish Foreign Minister reiterated the importance of the strategic partnership between Spain and Morocco, emphasizing that the relations between the two countries enjoy broad support within the European Union. He also stated that Morocco is a key partner in tackling major challenges such as terrorism and illegal migration, highlighting that cooperation between the two countries has yielded concrete results on multiple levels.

When asked about Spain’s position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, the minister stressed that Madrid’s stance is clear and consistent, supporting the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco, which he considers the most realistic and feasible solution. He also pointed out that this position is backed by the vast majority of European countries, reflecting a growing international consensus around the solution proposed by Rabat.

The Spanish official added that bilateral relations between the two countries have seen significant progress, particularly after the reopening of customs in Melilla and the establishment, for the first time in history, of a new customs office in Ceuta. This, he noted, reflects the shared determination to strengthen economic and trade cooperation.

The minister concluded his remarks by affirming that Spain, alongside the European Union, supports the efforts of the UN envoy to reach a mutually accepted solution that ensures stability and development in the region.
