In a politically and geopolitically significant move, the Republic of Ghana announced the suspension of its diplomatic relations with the so-called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (Polisario). This decision did not go unnoticed, garnering widespread attention in the Italian press, which explored its dimensions and regional and international implications.

The Italian website “Alma News 24” described the decision as “a step reflecting Ghana’s reassessment of its international relations in line with its national interests.” The outlet noted that Ghana seeks to strengthen its partnerships with politically and economically influential countries on the continent, notably Morocco. The site further stated that this decision supports efforts favoring Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, the newspaper “Nuovo Giornale Nazionale” emphasized that suspending relations with the “Polisario” represents a step towards distancing itself from entities that lack international recognition and adhering to realistic initiatives for resolving regional conflicts. The newspaper added that, through this decision, Ghana is sending a clear message about its intent to focus on regional cooperation and fostering stability.

Similarly, “Gli Stati Generali” published a report explaining that the decision reflects a shift in the African stance on the Sahara issue, as more countries back Morocco’s autonomy proposal, viewing it as a practical and comprehensive solution to the conflict.

For its part, the agency “Italpress” pointed out that Ghana’s decision could encourage other African countries to reconsider their positions on the Sahara issue, especially amid growing international support for Morocco and its initiative.

This extensive coverage in the Italian press highlights Europe’s keen interest in African issues, particularly the Sahara conflict, which remains one of the region’s most sensitive geopolitical challenges. The decision also bolsters Morocco’s position as a strategic partner on both continental and global levels and underscores the declining international support for the Polisario Front and its separatist demands.

This development signals that the balance of diplomatic power in Africa is shifting, with countries leaning toward peaceful and practical solutions that promote development and stability across the continent, affirming Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory and the Moroccan identity of the Sahara.
