Implementation of Paris Agreement: Morocco’s Achievements Highlighted

Rome – Morocco’s efforts in implementing the Paris agreement on climate change were highlighted by the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the UN Agencies in Rome, Ambassador Youssef Balla, during the high-level event held on Monday by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the agreement.

Speaking at this meeting, Balla said that the agreement was a major step forward in the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The ambassador outlined the guidelines of Morocco’s voluntary approach to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change, which is one of the major pillars of its National Strategy for Sustainable Development.

The Kingdom is part of the international effort to operationalize the Paris Agreement and accelerate the Agenda for Action while capitalizing on the momentum and mobilization of key stakeholders and on the achievements and progress made in recent years at various levels, he added.

“Five years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, we are facing a global health crisis, which could not only turn into a food crisis but which also reminds us of the complexity of our situation, linking peace, food systems, food security and climate change,” Balla stated.

Speaking of Morocco’s different endeavors, the diplomat recalled that the COP22, held in Marrakech on November 7-18, offered the opportunity for African countries to show leadership in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, through the intended nationally determined contributions (INDC).

Balla reiterated Morocco’s commitment to fighting against all causes of food insecurity, including those related to the effects of climate change while recalling that “we are committed to a common cause, which requires common and coordinated actions.”

The event was held in the presence of several climate stakeholders including, FAO’s Director-General Qu Dongyu and Italian Environment Minister Sergio Costa.
