PM: Sweden Ready to Play Active Role in NATO

“Sweden is prepared to assume an active role within NATO due to our unique capabilities, which can make a significant contribution to the alliance,” Prime Minister Kristersson said during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg

He went on to highlight that the Scandinavian nation stands ready to enhance NATO’s capabilities, contribute to the collective security of the region, and actively participate in NATO operations.

This declaration comes on the heels of a proposal made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, announced on Monday, suggesting that the Turkish Parliament ratify Sweden’s NATO membership request. Secretary-General Stoltenberg expressed hope that the process would proceed swiftly, indicating strong support for Sweden’s accession.

Sweden, along with its neighbor Finland, submitted its application for NATO membership in May 2022, several months after the onset of the conflict in Ukraine. Finland successfully became a NATO member in April 2023. However, Sweden’s request awaits ratification by Turkey and Hungary, with expectations that it will soon gain full NATO membership status.

Sweden’s eagerness to play an active role within NATO is seen as a significant development in the ongoing dynamics of European security and defense, especially in the wake of recent geopolitical shifts and conflicts in the region.
