Ten years after establishing their comprehensive strategic partnership, Morocco and China are setting their sights on a new chapter in their relationship, driven by large-scale investment, technological innovation, and an increasingly robust framework for economic cooperation.

Government officials, diplomats, business leaders and representatives of civil society gathered Tuesday evening at the Abou Regreg Conference Palace in Rabat to commemorate the tenth anniversary of a partnership that has, since its launch in 2016, evolved into one of the cornerstones of China’s engagement with Africa.
The ceremony, chaired by Morocco’s Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tehraoui, alongside China’s Ambassador to Morocco, Yu Jinsong, highlighted the growing depth of bilateral ties, which have expanded well beyond traditional diplomacy to encompass strategic sectors including industry, infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, advanced technologies and cultural exchange.
The anniversary marks a decade since the official visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to China in May 2016, a landmark occasion that reshaped relations between Rabat and Beijing through the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership founded on mutual respect, political trust, shared development objectives and South-South cooperation.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Yu Jinsong described Morocco as one of China’s key partners in Africa, stressing that bilateral relations are built on solid political trust, continuous dialogue and increasing convergence on a range of regional and international issues. She also underlined the considerable untapped potential for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
According to the Chinese ambassador, the coming decade should represent a “golden era” for Morocco-China relations. Beijing aims to deepen cooperation with Rabat by expanding investment, strengthening industrial partnerships, promoting innovative projects and increasing academic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Over the past several years, Morocco has steadily established itself as a leading industrial and logistics hub for Chinese companies seeking access to African and European markets. Thanks to its political stability, extensive network of free trade agreements, world-class infrastructure and strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, the Kingdom has attracted growing Chinese investment, particularly in electric vehicle manufacturing, battery production, green technologies, logistics and major infrastructure projects.
Cooperation has also expanded significantly in the healthcare sector, particularly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, through pharmaceutical partnerships, medical technology transfer and joint scientific research initiatives. At the same time, both countries continue to strengthen collaboration in higher education, vocational training, innovation and emerging technologies.
Morocco’s accession to China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2022 has further elevated bilateral cooperation. Rabat is positioning itself as a regional hub connecting European, African and Asian value chains, while Beijing increasingly views the Kingdom as a strategic gateway for expanding its economic footprint across the African continent.
Many analysts believe the first decade of the strategic partnership has laid a solid foundation for long-term cooperation. Yet the prospects for the years ahead appear even more promising. As global supply chains undergo profound restructuring and economies accelerate their transition toward low-carbon growth, Morocco and China possess complementary strengths that could make their partnership one of the most significant bridges linking Africa and Asia.
More than a diplomatic anniversary, this celebration reflects the beginning of a new phase in Morocco-China relations—one defined by a shared commitment to building a sustainable, innovative and value-driven partnership that supports the economic development of both nations while strengthening cooperation between the African and Asian continents.
