In a major international achievement that strengthens Morocco’s standing in safeguarding its centuries-old heritage, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, meeting in New Delhi for its 20th session, has approved the inscription of “The Moroccan Caftan: Arts, Traditions and Know-How” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This new UN recognition reflects the high esteem Morocco enjoys within the international community. It is above all an expression of the far-sighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in protecting heritage, promoting authentic artistic creativity, and preserving traditional knowledge as essential pillars of sustainable development and social cohesion.

The inscription of the caftan enshrines the profound historical richness of this emblematic garment—a living testimony to the Kingdom’s plural identity, its civilizational legacy, and its creative genius transmitted from one generation to the next. A symbol of elegance and refinement through the centuries, the caftan is also a school of meticulous craftsmanship, illustrated through its delicate embroidery, artisanal techniques, and stylistic traditions distinctive to Morocco’s diverse regions.

This international distinction also highlights Morocco’s active role within UNESCO and its continued commitment to protecting intangible cultural heritage in all its historical depth and cultural diversity—an effort grounded in shared universal values and the promotion of dialogue among peoples.

By adopting this decision, the UN committee acknowledges Morocco’s contribution to safeguarding this living heritage—one that combines creativity, identity, and the ongoing transmission of skills—making it a true vehicle for cultural dialogue and human connection.

Buoyed by this global recognition, Morocco continues to strengthen its efforts to protect, enhance, and pass on the knowledge associated with the Moroccan caftan, reaffirming its commitment to the core values that guide UNESCO: cultural diversity, mutual respect, and the protection of humanity’s shared heritage.
