Morocco: From Ambition to Global Leadership in Energy Transition

By Iman Alaoui/ ALDAR

Amid the rapid transformations reshaping the global energy landscape, Morocco stands out as one of the most ambitious and forward-looking models. The Kingdom has made energy transition not merely a response to climate challenges, but a strategic choice aimed at strengthening national sovereignty, boosting economic competitiveness, and ensuring sustainable, low-cost development.

In an interview for the PTX Visionaries program—produced in collaboration with the World Power-to-X Summit—Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, outlined a comprehensive vision of the country’s path in this field. She described the current stage as a period of “positive investment shock,” opening the door to major projects that expand national infrastructure, from electricity and storage networks to ports and liquefied natural gas terminals.

Benali emphasized that green hydrogen is one of the main pillars of Morocco’s new energy mix, leveraging the Kingdom’s strategic geographical position and its capacity to connect Africa with Europe. This bridging role, she noted, gives Morocco a pivotal place in the emerging global clean energy economy.

The Minister further stressed that energy transition is not merely a technical undertaking, but a broad social project designed to create new jobs, promote territorial equity, and establish an inclusive “energy citizenship” within a renewed social contract between the state and its citizens.

Through this ambitious vision, Morocco is moving with confidence toward consolidating its status as a regional and global power in renewable energy—where ideas are turning into concrete projects, and ambitions are becoming achievements that place the Kingdo
