A Message Published by The Guardian: Morocco’s Sovereignty Over the Sahara Enjoys Broad International and Popular Support… and the British Reaffirm Their Historic Stance

In a letter addressed to the British newspaper The Guardian, British writer and political analyst Andrew M. Rosemarine reaffirmed that Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, particularly Western Sahara, enjoys growing international recognition and broad popular acceptance within the region itself.

Rosemarine explained that the United Kingdom was one of the first countries to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, dating back to the Treaty of Friendship signed in 1721. This position has not changed—in fact, it has been reinforced recently through the joint statement signed in June 2025 between British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, which clearly stated that Morocco’s autonomy plan represents “the most serious, credible, and realistic” solution to the regional dispute.

The author added that support for Morocco’s sovereignty is not limited to Western countries, but also includes the majority of the population in the Saharan region, who are directly witnessing the results of Morocco’s economic development and infrastructure efforts on the ground. He noted that those who criticize Morocco on this issue are out of touch with the reality on the ground and unaware of the transformations taking place in the Sahara.

This message reflects a growing awareness within international public opinion of the true situation in the Sahara and serves as yet another blow to the maneuvers of opponents of Morocco’s territorial integrity, who seek at every opportunity to cast doubt on the legitimacy and fairness of Morocco’s position.
