The Moroccan Jewish Community in Canada Urges Ottawa to Recognize Morocco’s Sovereignty over Its Sahara

Simon Keslassy, President of the Moroccan Jewish Community in Toronto, Canada, has sent an official letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging him to formally recognize Morocco’s full sovereignty over its southern provinces.

In his letter, Keslassy emphasized that the time has come for Canada to adopt a clear stance in support of Morocco’s legitimate rights to its Sahara. He called on the federal government and all Canadian political parties to take a responsible position that reflects the evolving international landscape surrounding this issue.

This initiative comes amid a growing wave of international recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. Several Commonwealth nations, such as Kenya, Ghana, and the United Kingdom, have revised their traditional positions, following in the footsteps of the United States, one of Morocco’s key allies.

Keslassy pointed out that Canada’s position has long been characterized by caution and diplomatic neutrality. However, new developments and shifting geopolitical dynamics now require Ottawa to move beyond hesitation and actively support Morocco’s serious and realistic efforts to reach a lasting resolution to this regional dispute.

The importance of this appeal is heightened as the Moroccan Sahara file is set to return to the United Nations Security Council for discussion this coming October. This makes a reassessment of Canada’s position both urgent and necessary, especially at a time when Morocco continues to strengthen its diplomatic and global presence across various continents.
