Morocco Refuses to Align with Tehran: A Firm Stance Against a Regime That Supports Separatism and Terrorism

ALDAR / Analysis
Amid the joint statement signed by Egypt and 21 Islamic countries condemning Israeli strikes on Iran, Morocco’s position stood out for its clarity and firmness.
Morocco chose to distance itself from any expression of solidarity with the Iranian regime, basing its decision on firm strategic and security convictions.
This stance comes in the context of strained relations between Rabat and Tehran, which were severed years ago following documented accusations by Moroccan authorities of Iran’s involvement — through its military arm Hezbollah — in supporting, training, and arming the separatist Polisario Front in coordination with Algeria.
Analyses from credible think tanks, such as the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies and the Future Center for Research, indicate that Morocco perceives the Iranian threat not only as a regional concern but as part of a broader expansionist agenda. Tehran, they argue, seeks to establish influence in North Africa by fueling conflicts, encouraging separatist movements, and creating zones of instability that serve its geopolitical interests.
Observers emphasize that Morocco’s position should not be interpreted as support for the strikes on Iran. Rather, it reflects the country’s independent political decision-making and its rejection of Tehran’s attempts to impose a narrative of victimhood on Islamic public opinion, while at the same time financing and arming groups that undermine state sovereignty — foremost among them, the Kingdom of Morocco.
Through both official and unofficial channels, Morocco continues to assert that its dispute with the Iranian regime is not a temporary diplomatic disagreement but a principled confrontation over the respect for national unity and sovereignty. The Kingdom rejects all forms of foreign interference disguised as “resistance” or the “defense of just causes,” which in reality are mere instruments to destabilize regional security.
In doing so, Morocco reaffirms once more that it will not compromise on its national security or territorial integrity, regardless of external pressure or regional alignments. Instead, the Kingdom places its trust in rational alliances based on mutual respect and the fight against terrorism, steering clear of suspicious agendas that threaten regional stability.
