Investigative Report by Germany’s Deutsche Welle Reveals How Polisario Fighters Reached Syria with Support from Algerian Intelligence

Germany’s Deutsche Welle (DW) has released a bombshell investigative report shedding light on the involvement of members of the separatist Polisario Front in the Syrian conflict, with direct backing and facilitation by Algerian intelligence services.

The report, based on documented field investigations and eyewitness testimonies, revealed that several Polisario fighters were recruited and trained militarily on Algerian soil before being sent illegally to Syrian territory to join the fighting alongside the forces of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The findings published by DW indicate that some Polisario elements were involved in serious violations and crimes classified under international law as war crimes, particularly in operations of repression and sieges against Syrian civilians in areas that witnessed intense battles between regime forces and opposition groups.

These revelations deliver a severe blow to the Polisario’s narrative of commitment to “liberation and self-determination,” as the facts expose the group’s willingness to deploy its fighters in foreign wars unrelated to the Western Sahara conflict, confirming the mercenary nature of some of its armed factions.

The German investigation clearly points to the responsibility of Algerian security and intelligence agencies, which provided the training, coordination, and logistical support to transport the fighters, in the context of longstanding and complex ties between the Algerian regime and the Assad regime. These findings raise serious questions about Algeria’s involvement, as a sovereign state, in foreign conflicts through illegitimate proxies, which weakens its position in the eyes of the international community.

The DW investigative report adds that the entire operation was conducted in complete secrecy, far from media coverage and human rights organizations, reflecting the nature of security alliances in which Algeria uses the separatist front as a tool in regional conflicts that go far beyond the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Many observers believe that these revelations expose the stark contradiction in the political rhetoric of the Polisario and its backers, who claim to represent “a people seeking freedom,” while sending their members to suppress other peoples also striving for freedom, as seen in Syria.

While the Algerian regime continues to raise slogans of “revolutionary legitimacy” and “support for peoples’ right to self-determination,” the facts show that this support is selective and guided by geopolitical interests, even when it contradicts ethical principles and international covenants.

There is no doubt that this investigative report will spark a wave of international reactions, especially from human rights organizations and UN bodies concerned with monitoring war crimes. It is also expected to further isolate the Polisario diplomatically and place the Algerian regime in a difficult position on the global stage, particularly as more countries withdraw their recognition of the front and express full support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty.
