Luigi Einaudi Foundation Calls on Italian Prime Minister to Reassess Her Stance on the Saharan Issue

The Luigi Einaudi Foundation has called on the Italian government to reconsider its position on the Moroccan Sahara, warning that the absence of a serious dialogue process could lead to military escalation, threatening the stability of North Africa as a whole.

In an analysis published by the foundation, Andrea Cangini emphasized that Italy, which currently adopts a negative neutral stance, should offer more explicit support for Morocco, especially given the increasing pressure related to the interests of Italian energy companies.

The report also pointed out that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had previously expressed her support for the Polisario cause during her visit to the Tindouf camps in 2000, as well as through presenting a bill in the Italian parliament in 2007 recognizing the Polisario as a diplomatic entity. However, with her appointment as Prime Minister, her international policies have changed significantly.

On the other hand, a recent report revealed links between the Polisario and Hezbollah (Iran), as well as ties to terrorist groups in the Sahel and Sahara regions, which threaten regional security. In this context, Iran seeks to expand its influence in West Africa by supporting Algeria and the Polisario militias.

Meanwhile, Morocco is working to provide a political solution to the Sahara issue through its autonomy plan, and is strengthening regional stability by actively participating in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel and Sahara. Morocco also enjoys international support from the United States, France, and Israel.

In conclusion, the Luigi Einaudi Foundation urged the Italian government to adopt a stance aligned with its geopolitical interests, reflecting clear and unwavering support for Morocco in the face of separatist efforts backed by Algeria and Iran.
