BRICS Foreign Ministers Reaffirm Commitment to a Fairer World Amid Rising Global Turbulence

At a pivotal moment in international history, the first phase of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi participated alongside his counterparts in discussions centered on the group’s role in promoting global peace and strengthening cooperation in the face of growing international challenges.
Wang Yi, a senior member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, emphasized that the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations presents an opportunity to reflect on the shifting global order. He noted that the world is witnessing increasing turbulence that threatens the foundations of international cooperation and undermines the principles of shared development. He stressed that the current phase calls for decisive action from states that will shape the future of humanity, and underlined the leadership role BRICS countries are expected to play.
The Chinese official underscored that shared security must be the new foundation of any global system, calling for the adoption of the Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping. This initiative advocates dialogue over confrontation, partnership over narrow alliances, and win-win cooperation over zero-sum rivalry.
Addressing ongoing global crises, Wang Yi reiterated China’s support for all efforts to end the war in Ukraine through political means, urging a comprehensive and just settlement acceptable to all parties. He also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to end the unfolding humanitarian disaster, reaffirming China’s support for the two-state solution as the realistic path to lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
On the development front, Wang called for expanding cooperation among BRICS nations, particularly in health, education, agriculture, and poverty reduction. He affirmed China’s readiness to provide additional resources and initiatives to support countries of the Global South.
In terms of security, Wang stressed the importance of enhancing practical cooperation among BRICS countries through information sharing and capacity building to address threats like terrorism and organized crime. He also highlighted the need to leverage the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center, implement the joint food security strategy, and expand cooperation into promising areas such as space, deep-sea exploration, and the polar regions.
The ministers welcomed Indonesia’s first-time participation as a full member of the meeting and collectively stressed the importance of strengthening joint action in response to shifting geopolitical dynamics. They voiced strong support for China’s international initiatives, rejected hegemony and double standards, and expressed their determination to defend the interests of the Global South. They also advocated for a more just and equitable world order based on multilateralism, openness, and sustainable development.
This meeting comes at a time of growing complexity in international affairs, as BRICS countries strive to assert themselves as a major force in shaping a more balanced global order that better responds to the needs and aspirations of developing nations.
