Listing the Polisario as a Terrorist Organization Threatens South Africa’s Economy with Harsh Sanctions

ALDAR / Analysis

South Africa is at risk of facing a severe financial crisis if the United States proceeds with classifying the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. This potential American move could carry significant economic consequences for any entity that supports or finances the group, similar to previous cases involving countries like Sudan and Iran.

As soon as Washington officially designates the Polisario as a terrorist organization—alongside groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda—many international NGOs will likely be forced to withdraw from any cooperation or funding related to the group, in order to avoid legal repercussions or sanctions.

South Africa, known for its political and diplomatic support of the Polisario, could find itself at the center of the storm, especially if it is proven that associations linked to the ruling African National Congress (ANC) have collected donations on behalf of the group. In such a case, South African banks would come under intense scrutiny from U.S. authorities, potentially destabilizing the country’s financial system.

If Washington confirms that the South African government is directly or indirectly financing the Polisario, it may classify the country as a state sponsor of terrorism. This would result in severe economic and financial sanctions that could isolate South Africa from the global financial system.

The anticipated U.S. escalation may lead to an unprecedented crisis in relations between the Trump administration and the South African government, possibly resulting in a complete breakdown of economic, diplomatic, and security ties.
