Nasser Bourita’s Visit to Madrid: Spain Reaffirms Steadfast Support for Autonomy Initiative as Solution to Sahara Conflict

ALDAR/
Nasser Bourita arrived in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on a visit that carried a clear message from the Spanish government: Spain’s position on the Moroccan Sahara remains consistent and unwavering.
Three years have passed since the signing of the Joint Declaration, following historic talks between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, on April 7, 2022. Since then, Spain’s stance on the Sahara issue has remained firm.
On Thursday, during a joint press conference held in Madrid between the Spanish Foreign Minister and his Moroccan counterpart, Spain once again reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this initiative represents “the most serious, realistic, and credible basis” for resolving the conflict, describing it as the most reliable option for achieving lasting peace and real stability in the region.
This position reflects the continued understanding and alignment between the two countries and confirms the important role that Spain plays in supporting Morocco’s efforts to resolve this fabricated conflict.
These statements come at a critical time, as the Kingdom of Morocco continues its determined efforts to reach a peaceful and lasting resolution to the dispute, relying on international support, particularly from strategic partners such as Spain.
