During the UN Security Council’s regular briefing on developments in the Moroccan Sahara, the Head of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) delivered a clear and candid assessment of the situation on the ground. He praised the high level of professionalism demonstrated by the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco and confirmed the failure of the separatist Polisario Front to alter the military status quo.

In his remarks, which were met with interest by Security Council members, the UN official emphasized that the Polisario Front has “clearly failed to make any territorial or tactical gains through military operations.” Despite repeated attempts, the group has been unable to inflict any damage on Moroccan forces stationed along the security wall.

The MINURSO chief noted that the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces display “remarkable discipline and a high capacity for restraint,” even in the face of “persistent provocations” by Polisario elements. He added that Morocco follows a sophisticated strategy based on advanced military readiness and effective deterrence capabilities, all while avoiding escalation.

While commending Morocco’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, the UN official confirmed that the Moroccan military operates under strict rules of engagement in accordance with international law, underscoring the country’s credibility as a reliable partner in regional peacekeeping efforts.

This latest UN briefing comes at a time when international support continues to grow for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a realistic and serious solution to the long-standing regional conflict. In contrast, the Polisario Front is experiencing increasing diplomatic and political setbacks, especially as more countries recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
