Algeria… From Defensive Rhetoric to Practices That Threaten Regional Stability

Aldar / Analysis
In a new move that reflects the duality of Algerian rhetoric, authorities in Algeria announced the downing of a Malian military drone, under the pretext of a “violation of the country’s air sovereignty.” While this action appears to be a self-defense measure on the surface, it actually reveals an escalatory approach that portrays Algeria as a source of regional tension rather than a partner in building security and stability.
The Algerian statement, issued with legal and security justifications, was nothing more than a cover for a unilateral act that reflects a hegemonic mindset and unlawful interference in the affairs of neighboring states.
Instead of pursuing dialogue and regional coordination, Algeria resorts to military escalation, raising serious concerns about its true intentions toward its African surroundings.
What is even more alarming is the timing of this incident, which coincides with sensitive regional developments, particularly in the Sahel region—an area plagued by complex conflicts, where nations are striving to overcome crises through cooperation and security partnerships. Such unilateral actions undermine every joint effort and pave the way for further division.
This incident is not the first time Algeria has been accused of sowing chaos or interfering in others’ affairs under the guise of sovereignty or defense. Rather, it is part of a series of practices that have led observers to describe the behavior of the Algerian regime as “adventurous” and “irresponsible.”
Amid this reality, hope remains pinned on the awareness of African peoples and the wisdom of rational regional and international powers to firmly confront policies that spread chaos and target the stability of vulnerable nations under false pretenses.
