Discovery of a Paved Road Strengthening Trade Links Between Morocco and the Sahel Region

ALDAR/

In a remarkable development, a paved road has been discovered connecting the cities of Ouadane and Tidjikja in Mauritania, despite its difficulty to detect via satellite images. This discovery means that the route extending from Zouerate to the border crossing with Mali at Gogui is now fully paved, enhancing the possibility of transforming it into a strategic trade corridor.

If a new border crossing between Morocco and Mauritania is established at Zouerate, this road could become an economic artery linking Morocco to the Malian capital, Bamako, and extending to serve the entire Sahel region. Such a project could act as a catalyst for economic development, benefiting the countries of the region.

However, security challenges remain, as the road could be vulnerable to terrorist infiltration, kidnappings, and theft. Nonetheless, Mauritania has the capacity to enhance the security of this vital route by establishing a series of military outposts at strategic locations to prevent potential threats from criminal or terrorist groups.

On the other hand, Morocco must adopt a well-calculated strategic vision based on an accurate reading of the geopolitical landscape to offer real economic opportunities to African nations. This could lead to a transformative shift in the region and strengthen Morocco’s role as a key partner in economic development across the continent.
