Morocco Strengthens Its Leadership at the UN as a Key Actor for International Peace and Security

ALDAR/

Morocco continues to reinforce its standing within the United Nations system as a trusted partner in promoting international peace and security. This role is rooted in a long-term Strategic Royal Vision that has guided the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to UN peacekeeping operations since 1960.

Today, Morocco ranks ninth among the world’s largest troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping missions, reflecting its enduring dedication to global stability and conflict resolution. Over the decades, Moroccan peacekeepers have served in numerous missions across different regions, helping support peace efforts and protect vulnerable populations.

The Kingdom’s growing influence within the UN is further illustrated by the responsibilities it currently holds. In 2026, Morocco serves as Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and acts as Coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement on peacekeeping matters. These leadership roles underscore the confidence the international community places in Morocco’s experience and contributions to international peace and security.

The visit of Jean-Pierre Lacroix comes at a pivotal moment for the United Nations, as Secretary-General António Guterres advances a broad reform agenda aimed at adapting the organization to emerging global challenges. Among these initiatives is the “UN80” program, designed to streamline and modernize the UN Secretariat while enhancing the institution’s overall effectiveness.

At the same time, the United Nations is undertaking a comprehensive strategic review of its peacekeeping operations and the wider international peace and security architecture. The objective is to restore the primacy of political solutions in conflict prevention and resolution, at a time when the international community faces increasingly complex security challenges.

Against this backdrop, Morocco continues to emerge as a credible and influential actor within the multilateral system. Its longstanding commitment to UN peace operations, combined with its expanding diplomatic engagement, positions the Kingdom as a valuable partner in ongoing efforts to promote peace, stability, and sustainable security around the world.
