China’s Ambassador to Morocco Writes on the Distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758: What a Mistake! What Absurdity! What Danger!

By H.E. Ms. Yu Jingsong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Morocco

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the recovery of Taiwan, as well as a renewed and firm determination by the international community to uphold the “One China” principle and support the cause of China’s national reunification more strongly than ever.
On October 25, the 54th anniversary of the adoption of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 will also be commemorated.
Regrettably, some countries and forces today are attempting to distort this resolution, spreading the false and misleading notion that “Taiwan’s status is undefined,” in a futile attempt to expand what they call “Taiwan’s international space.”
Such an endeavor constitutes a serious mistake, complete absurdity, and a grave danger.

1. On its error:
The fundamental error lies in the fact that Resolution 2758 officially and unequivocally affirms the “One China” principle, leaving no gray area or ambiguity.
The resolution clearly states:

“The General Assembly recognizes that the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China are the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and that the People’s Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
It decides to restore all rights to the People’s Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to immediately expel the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the seat they illegally occupy at the United Nations and in all its affiliated organs.”

This text makes it clear that there is only one China in the world, that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China, including Taiwan, and that there is no such thing as “two Chinas.”
Distorting this resolution amounts to falsifying history and represents a major political offense.

2. On its absurdity:
The absurdity lies in the fact that the adoption of Resolution 2758 definitively resolved the issue of China’s exclusive representation in the United Nations.
Before the vote, the United States attempted to push a “dual representation” proposal, aiming to “recognize the People’s Republic of China” while simultaneously “retaining the representation of the Republic of China (Taiwan),” in a desperate effort to create “two Chinas” within the UN.
Many countries strongly opposed this proposal, considering it contrary to law, reality, justice, and the principles of the UN Charter.
With the overwhelming adoption of Resolution 2758, the U.S. proposal was rejected and rendered a document of no value.
Today, the fact that some countries are attempting to revive these dead ideas and promote the notion of “one China, one Taiwan” in the UN or other multilateral organizations is a return to a dead end—a futile and absurd action.

3. On its danger:
Questioning Resolution 2758 challenges the international order established after World War II and the authority of the United Nations itself.
The preamble of the resolution states that “the restoration of the lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China is essential for the maintenance of the United Nations Charter and the cause which the Organization serves under that Charter.”
This is an official affirmation of the commitment to uphold the authority of the United Nations.
Those who distort or question this resolution violate fundamental principles of international relations, particularly sovereign equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, undermining the international order established since the end of World War II and threatening to return the world to a law-of-the-jungle scenario, where the strong dominate the weak—an extremely dangerous situation.

Morocco, for its part, has been a witness, supporter, and defender of Resolution 2758.
In 1960, His Late Majesty King Hassan II—then Crown Prince—expressed strong support at the United Nations for restoring the People’s Republic of China to its legitimate seat in the organization.
Eleven years later, Morocco joined many friendly countries in supporting the overwhelming adoption of Resolution 2758.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Morocco sixty-seven years ago, the Kingdom has remained steadfast in its adherence to the One China policy, supporting China in safeguarding its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national reunification—a position that China deeply values and appreciates.

Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Morocco strategic partnership.
China reaffirms its readiness to continue supporting Morocco in safeguarding its national security and stability, and in strengthening mutual and consistent support on issues affecting the fundamental interests of both countries.
Our shared responsibility today is to protect the achievements of World War II and the postwar international order, defend international justice and fairness, and confront any attempts to distort history or interfere in the internal affairs of states.

The “One China” principle represents the will of the people and the justice of the cause.
The international community’s commitment to this principle remains unwavering.
And the course of history toward the full reunification of China is now irreversible.
